   UPDATE at 3+ years: Remains as impressive as my original review suggests. Updated OS is even stronger and more performant. Apps keep getting better. Upgraded to 16TB drives and the RAID rebuild worked flawlessly. This unit has been online 24/7/365 since installed in January 2020 and the only downtime has occurred when I've initiated for maintenance. Can't recommend more strongly.
   
   Original review: I've been using NAS devices for 10 years and this product is without exception the top of the line in the value category. Installed two 8TB Toshiba NAS N300 drives and the set up was just about automatic. Amazing OS and user interface. Tools, utilities and apps that have all worked flawlessly so far. The DS 218+ as packaged is so much more than network attached storage. Provides many network server functions and features. Highly recommended!

   Bought this in 2019, upgraded the ram on day one, and upgraded the fan to a noctua NF-A9 FLX. it is recommended that you upgrade the ram for better responsive performance. I did the fan for peace of mind. all my PCs are connected to this as are my roku's, iPads, cell phones for playing movies and accessing files. works every well. the point is that it just works and it works well. the user interface is nice and easy to use. Security on it is very nice. I have set my up like you would find at a job. I like to think that having the NAS has reduced the price of my computers as none of them need a lot of onboard storage (I have built 2 of them and customized the third). basically I have just enough storage space on each computer to fill up 25% of the onboard storage because the NAS as 2.67 TB. this is great considering storage is priced high right now. I have put all my movies on the NAS and add new ones cheaply which saves money. the savings have more than paid for the NAS several times over. this NAS has been a great asset to have.

   4 8tb reds work good in this NAS as a raid 5 setup (24 TB total) where you can do wireless encrypted time machine backups for Mac. I use it for a mix of PC and Mac desktop backups and file sharing. You can detect it and set up pretty easy... SMB protocol / file path for connecting Macs. I want to learn more with web apps and how to replicate remotely. There are plenty of cool apps available in the web interface and I have more to learn when I have time. I plugged mine to a Apple AirPort Extreme router that is also connected to my internet service router and my PC, all working great! If I ever restore from a time machine backup, I imagine that I will have to move that file to a USB hard drive to restore as I don’t think CMD +R boot allows for a network restore option. Oh, and the case is quiet and always on. Also it has a cool feature where it can connect via two network cables as you can see in my attached photo. 😎 4 gigs of ram is enough for everything that I need it to do, I like that it can be upgraded later if I want and it can take a could nvme buffer drives, which I wouldn’t need for my use. If I was editing photos directly of of this device, I may consider something like that for possible increased performance. Right now it’s got slow always on, redundant, centralized, Mac and PC backups and file storage.

   First NAS I have ever owned and I love it. I am by no means a IT expert! But setup was not bad (with the help of a couple YouTube videos). Now that I got it going it works great for my Plex media server.

   It may be too early to tell but I'm loving my new DS918+ NAS server. The initial set up was fairly easy to do although I found plenty of 3rd-party support on youtube to answer any of my questions and get it right from the get-go. I do have to say, their UI/UX could be a bit friendlier and better design. The DW NAS OS, for example, has a better design all together which makes for a more pleasant UX. But I'm ok with it now and after using it heavily for the 1st week I feel quite comfortable with it.
   Regarding the hardware, I was able to replace the 4 GB DDR3 that came with it and replace it with 2 x 8 GB DDR3 for a total of 16 GB DDR3. It works great! Then I added 2 of Samsung 970 EVO 1TB SSD (MZ-V7E1T0BW) NVMe M.2 V-NAND Internal Solid State Drives... Overkill? We'll see... So far I have been able to work off the server flawlessly without any time lag and I'm loving it. I also added 4 x 4TB = 16TB of HD space and again, I'm in love!! The uploading and downloading rates are great and the machine is "almost" completely silent. I did however placed it over an open rack that I use for storage so it keeps cool and there's plenty of airflow in the back and below of it. Overall, my experience with Synology has been great. I highly recommend this NAS.

   This NAS just works. It was easy to configure, not noisy even with a high fan speed, and works great with twin WD Gold / Enterprise series drives. Using it via LAN to my router with an e-Sata backup drive. Great solution for protecting small business data and highly configurable. Will also use it for virtualized development environments.
